What I Learned at the Shine Bright Against Cancer Color Run/Walk
Last September, I stood at the starting line of the Shine Bright Against Cancer Color Run/Walk in New London, WI, wearing a fresh white T-shirt, clean sneakers, and a heart full of anticipation. By the time I crossed the finish line, I was drenched in colorful powder, surrounded by laughter, and filled with a newfound joy I hadn’t experienced in a while.
The Color Run isn’t your typical race. It’s a celebration of life, community, and movement. There were no timers or pressure—just vibrant music, clouds of color, and hundreds of people of all ages running, walking, dancing, and having fun together. It wasn’t about speed; it was about enjoying the journey.
It’s Not About the Miles — It’s About the Moments
What struck me most wasn’t the distance or pace—it was the fun moments along the way. Each time we passed a color station, volunteers showered us in vibrant powder—pink, blue, yellow, and green. Children squealed with joy, strangers exchanged high-fives, and friends paused to take selfies. It reminded me that progress in life isn’t always about speed or linear movement. Sometimes, it’s about showing up, having fun, and embracing each moment as it comes.
Community Over Competition
While the colors and music were fantastic, what really stood out was the people. Parents strolled with their children in strollers, friends wore matching tutus, and elderly couples walked arm-in-arm. There was no competition, no rush—just people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, supporting one another and moving together toward a shared goal.
A Splash of Perspective
When I looked down at my now tie-dyed clothes after the run, it hit me — this is what life should feel like more often. Messy. Colorful. Unexpected. And best of all, shared with others who lift each other up along the way.
The Shine Bright Against Cancer Color Run/Walk is more than just an event; it’s a powerful reminder of the beauty of community, fun, and supporting a greater cause. Proceeds from this event benefit scholarships through the New LASS Scholarship program at the New London Senior High School, helping local students pursue their futures.
So, whether you’re a runner, walker, or someone just looking for a little spark in your life, consider signing up for next year’s Color Run. It’s not about the race. It’s about the joy, the connections, and the chance to make a positive impact on others.
